Gate 35 Quabbin Reservoir Winter Day Trip

Welcome to Quabbin Reservoir Gate 35 in New Salem, Massachusetts

This post will show you winter scenes from my recent hike to the Quabbin Reservoir shore along the Gate 35 path. A flat path that is usually plowed after snow storms, Quabbin Gate 35 is ideal for a fun, quiet winter hike that is suitable for all levels.

How to get to Quabbin Reservoir - Gate 35 (New Salem, MA)

Reach the gate by driving on Old North Dana Road off of Massachusetts (MA) 122 in New Salem, MA. Click here for detailed directions.

What to see at Quabbin Reservoir - Gate 35

After parking by the yellow gate (there are a couple of spots so I usually park on the side of the road facing back towards MA-122), start your walk down the path headed straight. Do not turn left at the first fork unless you want to go for a longer hike that weaves through the woods around the Quabbin Reservoir shore.

On a recent hike, this image captures what the path was like. Wearing good hiking/snow boots will give you enough traction to comfortably hike.

Continue down the path for about one-third mile to reach the reservoir shore. In fresh snow cover, the landscape still pops, and you can hike on the shoreline (sand) to follow the resevoir.

Tip: Try to plan your visit when the sky is cloudy to really take in the rustic natural scenery. On a really bright day with no clouds, the light will be harsh in the peak afternoon hours.

Tip: Fresh snow cover makes it easy to hike along the reservoir shore line in either direction and further explore the serene, expansive nature at Quabbin. You can even link up with other gates.

If you can’t visit Gate 35 this winter season to see the Quabbin, I recommend planning a day trip in the fall: see pics here.
