Ned’s Point Lighthouse Day Trip in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts
Welcome to Ned’s Point Lighthouse
Ned’s Point Lighthouse is a historic, 19th century lighthouse situated at the tip of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts (MA) harbor on Buzzards Bay and great day trip destination for beach goers and beautiful coastal views. This blog post provides information to help you plan a fun day trip to this south coast destination.
How to get to Ned’s Point Lighthouse in Mattapoisett, MA |
Plot directions in Google Maps to 50 Ned’s Point Road in Mattapoisett and park for free in the beat up dirt circular driveway lot by the rocky coast. There is ample parking, and you are only steps from the lighthouse.
What to see at Ned’s Point Lighthouse
As soon as you park, you’ll enjoy beautiful and expansive views of Buzzard’s Bay and can walk right up to the 41-foot lighthouse tower.
You can spend a short or long time here. People will bring lawn chairs and beach blankets to picnic here; there are also several picnic tables for families, including at a shaded section, to spread out and spend the afternoon.
With sweeping views of Buzzard’s Bay, visitors will often hang out in their vehicles for a couple of hours.
There’s an access point to the Mattapoisett town beach by the end of the parking circle at the far left, and you can also launch kayaks here too.
The best thing though to me is lingering to watch the sunset sweep and fade slowly over Ned’s Point Lighthouse and the panoramic views of Buzzards Bay and the harbor.
There are bathroom facilities, though they were locked at 4 p.m. EDT when I visited recently on a November Sunday.
People do bring their dogs to hang out on the small park lawn and occasionally fly kites here.
As mentioned on their website, The Friends of Ned’s Point Lighthouse offered tours on select days in summer and early fall 2024 where the public can climb up to the tower. They mention the repairs that are needed as well and ask for donations.
